Sanders House Transformation

Our lovely clients contacted us in the Fall of 2022, having just gone into contract on a house here in Sebastopol. The house has been extensively remodeled but not in the client’s aesthetic and the desire was to simplify and update the overall look inside and out.

What initially jumped out to me was the rustic nature and the high contrast that was used throughout the house. It made the spaces feel somewhat jarring. We wanted to quiet down the base and add punches of color in our finishes.

Phase one would be the back half of the house and the paint on the exterior. So, we would begutting the bathrooms and updating the bedrooms. The floor that runs into the hallway and the living areas would live another day or at least until we start phase two.

We started with some minor changes to the floor plan in the bathrooms. The master lost a closet and had some door swing changes to clean up the function of the space and open it up a bit more for a much larger shower.

We are big believers in simple, smart floor plans. Your floor plan is the foundation for everything else that you put on top of it and it is vital that it is distilled down to its best form.

It is so important to review the floor plan for areas that are not flowing or working in the ways that they should be. Sometimes very small changes can have a big impact not just on the flow but also the feel of a space. This project was one of those examples.

Our client liked white space along with the fun use of color. We incorporated that feeling with the cabinetry design and the use of cane, vibrant wallpaper and colorful tile.

These are the presentation renderings of the guest bath prior to the build out.

I love this bathroom. The rustic brick in the deep blue, the use of simple white field tile along with the arched tub enclosure, and the green vanity and cabinets that were used for storage.

This is the rendering of the master bathroom.

And here is the after. I think that you can still play to the classics while using color in tile and wallpaper to add a fun, unique hand to a design.

The caning adds such a lovely layer of tone and texture to the simple, off-white cabinetry.

The last of the first phase were the master and guest bedrooms, which got a facelift with new paint, flooring, and furnishings.

We made some very simple, small changes to the master bedroom.

We removed a pony wall and framed it in to the ceiling to create a true entry into the master suite.

We also rearranged the furniture layout to make better use of the size and shape of the room, as well as enabling us to center the bed under this incredible light fixture that truly makes the space.

The light, art and pops of color make this a fun bedroom retreat.

Our client had a lovely collection of art that made designing around a dream.

This was such a fun project and a great example of creating a vision that is the best version of our client and the house to transform spaces into homes that just feel good.

We are currently working on the outdoor patio and pool area and will be circling back to address phase two so stay tuned for more to see.
